Christmas in October & Drunk Driving
The fact that Christmas arrives earlier each year is called the "Christmas Creep", and it is a fascinating economic wonder in America. Over fall break, which was two weeks ago, nearly every store I went to, from the Dollar Tree to Home Depot and Marshalls, had Christmas merchandise for sale...almost 60 days before Christmas! It's capitalistic craziness! Christmas has for years consumed Thanksgiving, and now it's devouring Halloween, but according to an online economist there are reasons for this; a late Thanksgiving means that retailers need to compensate by starting earlier, there aren't any presidential election ads blocking the airways, and Hanukah arrives before Thanksgiving this year. Anyways, since it seems Advent has already arrived, I recorded one of my favorite Christmas hymns "O Come All Ye Faithful" on the organ, for you to enjoy while reading this post, and get you in the holiday spirit.

Now, to segue from these lovely Christmas images to drunk driving...
Yesterday, the the RA's hosted a drunk driving awareness event outside of my dorm. This event consisted of pizza and a drunk driving simulation where we drove a bicycle around cones while simulation goggles impaired our vision. The activity, sponsored by the UNC Department of Public Safety, was not at all safe, as the simulation consisted of basically blindfolding oneself and speeding around cones--all without a helmet. People even got the tricycle bike on two wheels, while passengers were screaming in the basket. Also, people began playing "drunk tag" with the goggles, and it was funny hearing people say things like, "Drunk driving is fun," and "Whose next to drive drunk?" But in all seriousness, as this dangerous activity illustrated, drunk driving is REALLY risky, and should be avoided at all costs. A drunk driver actually flipped his car in my neighbor's yard this past summer,just narrowly escaping death. That event certainly awakened me to the horrors of drunk driving.
